I can still feel the impact of one of my favorite childhood teacher's words:
"Desiree, if you are afraid to speak your words, then I want you to draw and paint them." I've since gotten over the extreme shyness but continue striving to communicate through my artwork. I create portrait and figurative pieces primarily with Sennelier oil pastels and Prismacolor colored pencils on Colourfix paper/ board or an archival survace with sandpaper grit. My favorite subjects include children, women of color, and th simple lives of ordinary people--most often appearing to be lost in thought or having a peaceful introspective moment. |
